WHAT: Beginning October 1, 2015, Texas truck drivers will begin seeing new ads reminding them to be careful at railroad crossings when they stop to fill up at select fueling stations across the state. The ads are part of a campaign being launched by Texas Operation Lifesaver, thanks to a grant secured from the Federal Highway Administration.

The new program will consist of digital messaging at diesel pumps located at truck stops and service stations, specifically aimed at catching the attention of CDL drivers. With messages such as “Always Expect a Train” and “See Tracks? Think Train”, the goal is to remind drivers to be aware and operate safely at all railroad crossings.

During the course of the 60-day campaign, volunteers from Texas Operation Lifesaver and Union Pacific will also conduct periodic visits to participating truck stops to distribute additional safety literature and interact with the drivers.

Texas Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit public safety organization committed to reducing the number of tragic incidents at highway-rail grade crossing intersections and trespassing on railroad rights-of-way. Union Pacific is a proud partner and sponsor of Texas Operation Lifesaver and counts safety as its number one priority.

WHY: Texas leads the nation in the number of highway-rail crossing collisions. Freight trains traveling 55 miles per hour take more than a mile to stop, which is why drivers are urged to stop in designated areas when railroad signals, flashers and gates indicate a train is approaching. With the economic growth seen across the state, large truck traffic is increasing. Safety education is imperative to limit the number of unfortunate collisions that may occur at crossings.

WHEN/WHERE: Ads will begin October 1, 2015, at truck stops across Texas, mainly focused in the southern and western portions of the state.

NOTE: Media interested in visiting a participating truck stop and/or further discussing the campaign are asked to contact Jeff DeGraff, Union Pacific Railroad Media Director, to make arrangements.
